What Does a Central Air Conditioner Do?
A central air conditioner works by circulating air through your home using a system of ducts that supply the cool air and return the “used” warmer air to the system for cooling again. The a/c unit produces cold air, which travels through filters to clean the air and then into your home via ducts and out through registers in your walls or floor. That cool air circulates through your home and becomes warmer as it does so. The warmer air then enters back into the system through return registers and ducts.
In addition to keeping your home comfortable with cool air, central air conditioners also serve as dehumidifiers, removing some of the moisture from the air as it moves through the system.
Are There Different Kinds of Central Air Conditioners?
Yes, there are! Not only are there a number of manufacturers, such as Trane, Ruud, Carrier, and Rheem, there are also two different kinds of a/c units—split-system units and packaged units (and Air Conditioning Dallas technicians are equipped to help you with either kind!).
Split-System Air Conditioning Dallas
A split-system is named for the two pieces—one inside and one outside—the contain the equipment necessary to keep your home comfortable. The condenser and compressor are housed in a metal cabinet that sits outside your home and the furnace or indoor part of the heat pump are located in a cabinet inside your house. A split-system air conditioner is a great choice for installation in homes that already have a furnace, but don’t have an air conditioner. In these cases, the cost of a split-system will usually be less than a packaged system.
Packaged System Air Conditioning System
A packaged system contains all parts - the evaporator, compressor, and condenser - in one cabinet. The cabinet is set either on the roof or on a cement slab next to the house. A packaged system is great for a small commercial building and makes it unnecessary to have a separate furnace indoors.
